How to make a jeopardy-style quiz board

  1. Start a board. Keep the sample general-knowledge board, press Blank board, or open My boards for your saved ones.
  2. Set the size. Choose 1 to 6 Categories and 1 to 6 Rows. Under Points per row, set the value of each row; the defaults are 100 to 500.
  3. Name the categories in the boxes at the top of each column.
  4. Write the clues. Click a cell, type the Clue and the Answer, and tick Bonus tile (×2 points) for a double-value tile. Empty cells are skipped in play.
  5. Add teams. Choose 1 to 8 Teams and name them. Optional: Wrong answers lose points and a Clue timer of 10 to 60 seconds, with Chime when time is up.
  6. Press Play.

Running the game: teams, scoring and the presenter screen

In play mode the board shows a tile for every clue. Click a tile — or tab to it and press Enter — to open the clue. Read it out, let the teams answer, then press Show answer (A). Award the points with the team’s button (keys 1 to 8) or press No one (0). With penalties on, a wrong answer subtracts the value once per team, and the tile stays open for the other teams. Back to board (B or Esc) closes a clue without using it. A used tile turns grey and shows the color of the team that won it.

The score bar under the board has + and − buttons and an editable score for each team, and Undo last award reverses the last award, including the tile. When every tile is used, or when you press End game, the final scores appear with the winner.

For a room, press Open audience screen and drag the new window to the projector. The audience sees the board, the clue, the countdown, the scores and finally the winner; answers appear there only after you reveal them. While you edit the board, it waits for you. The two windows talk to each other inside your browser, so nothing is sent over the internet. Present (F) shows your own window full screen if you only have one screen.

The presenter laptop shows answers and score buttons; the TV shows only the board, clue and scores. SCIENCE · 300 Which gas makes up most of Earth's atmosphere? Random trivia generator: fill a board or quiz yourself

The built-in trivia bank has 300 original questions in 10 categories — Geography, Science, History, Food & drink, Words & language, Nature & animals, Sports, Space, Technology, and Arts & music — with six questions at each of five difficulty levels. Some less familiar facts name their source, such as Britannica, NASA or NIST, and it shows with the answer on the Random trivia tab. Only timeless facts are included — no “current champion” questions.

Fill empty cells with random trivia completes a board in one click and leaves your own clues alone. On the Random trivia tab, choose a category and difficulty and go through questions one at a time with Show answer and Next question — a quick pub-quiz round that needs no board.

Templates, saving and spreadsheet import

  • My boards keeps up to 20 boards on this device: open, duplicate or delete them.
  • Export .json and Import .json move a board between computers.
  • Import CSV and Export CSV work with any spreadsheet: category, value, clue, answer and an optional bonus column.
  • Share makes a link with the whole board, answers included, so don’t post it where players can find it.
  • Print gives you the board and a separate answer key page for the host.

Tips for good clues and point values

  • Write short clues that can be read aloud in one breath and fit on the screen.
  • Make difficulty match the points. Row one should be easy for everyone in the room; the last row should stump most teams.
  • Mix in a team category — “Our office” or “Who said it?” — to make the game personal.
  • Use one or two bonus tiles, not more, so a single answer can’t decide the game.

To split people into fair teams first, use the team generator. For lighter warm-ups before the quiz, try the random question generator, the charades generator or the random word generator; for a bingo round between quizzes, use the bingo caller.

FAQ

Can I make my own jeopardy-style game for free?

Yes, free and without an account. Type the category names across the top, click each cell to add a clue and its answer, and set the points for each row (100 to 500 by default). Start from the sample board, a blank board or random trivia, then press Play once at least one clue is ready.

How does a jeopardy-style quiz work?

Categories run across the top, and each column holds clues that get harder and are worth more points further down. A team picks a tile, the host reads the clue, and a right answer wins its points; with penalties on, a wrong answer costs the same amount. When the board is empty, the team with the most points wins.

Can I use it with teams and keep score?

Yes. Add up to eight teams, each with a name and its own color. Press a team's award button to add the points; with Wrong answers lose points on, the minus button subtracts them, once per team and clue. Undo last award fixes a slip, and you can edit any score directly.

How does the presenter screen work?

Your window is the presenter screen, with the answers and award buttons. Open audience screen opens a second window for the projector or TV that shows the board, clue, timer and scores — and the answer only after you press Show answer. Both windows must be in the same browser on the same computer.

Can I fill the board with random trivia?

Yes. Fill empty cells with random trivia puts original questions into every empty cell. A column named like a trivia category — Science or Geography, for example — gets questions from that category; the first row gets the easiest questions and the fifth the hardest. The Random trivia tab also serves single questions.

Is there a jeopardy-style template I can start from?

Yes. The page opens with a sample board of 25 general-knowledge clues, Blank board gives an empty 5 × 5 grid, and Fill empty cells with random trivia completes any board. No PowerPoint needed: Print makes a board page plus an answer key (save it as a PDF from the print dialog), and Export CSV gives you a reusable spreadsheet.

Can I import questions from a spreadsheet?

Yes. Save your sheet as CSV with the columns category, value, clue and answer, plus an optional bonus column, and use Import CSV. Rows with a problem — a value that isn't a number from 1 to 10,000, say — are listed by row number and skipped; the rest are imported.

Is this the official Jeopardy! game?

No. This is an independent quiz board maker inspired by the classic game-show format, with its own design and original trivia. It isn't the TV show, its questions or its rules. Jeopardy! is a trademark of its owner, and Unbiased Wheel is not affiliated with or endorsed by them.
