How to use the random question generator

  1. Pick categories and depth. Icebreakers and Work & teams are on by default, at Light and Medium depth. Press any category or depth to add or remove it.
  2. Press Next question or the Space bar. The question appears on a big card with its category.
  3. Add who answers (optional). Under Who answers, list the people in the meeting; each question names the next person.
  4. Add an answer timer (optional). Choose 30, 60, 90 or 120 seconds under Answer timer; it starts with each question and chimes at zero.
  5. Prefer a list? Switch Show to List, choose How many (up to 20), and press New list — then Copy, Download .txt or Print it for a workshop.

Questions you’ve seen don’t come back, even after a reload: this browser remembers them until every matching question has come up, then a new round starts. Reset starts one early, and Clear my data forgets them.

Question categories

  • Icebreakers — light openers for any group: favorite snacks, the best part of the week.
  • Work & teams — how people like to work, wins, habits and advice, for stand-ups and team days.
  • Would you rather — two options, such as working from a beach or a mountain cabin.
  • This or that — quick pairs like coffee or tea, early bird or night owl; great for a show of hands.
  • Hypothetical — “if you could…” questions that start conversations.
  • Funny — useless talents, strange food combinations and other things worth a laugh.
  • Deep & reflective — for groups who know each other: lessons learned, what matters, what you’d tell your younger self.
  • Retrospective — what went well, what slowed us down, what to try next sprint.
  • Remote warm-ups — questions that work through a camera: the view from your window, the object within arm’s reach.
  • Get to know you — background, hobbies and stories, for new teams and onboarding.

Picking who answers

A fair rotation stops the same confident voices from answering first every time. The tool shuffles your list, goes through it once, then shuffles again, making sure the last person of one round isn’t first in the next. With five people and twelve questions, everyone answers two or three times. To pick a single person for something else, the random name picker does that with a reveal.

Question of the day

The Question of the day box above the card shows one question that is the same for everyone on the same date, so a whole team can answer it in a chat channel. It comes from the light and medium work-safe questions in Icebreakers, Work & teams, Remote warm-ups and Get to know you. No random pick is involved: the date chooses it. Click the box to copy “Question of the day: …” for your team chat. After 157 days the list starts again.

Tips for icebreakers that don’t feel awkward

  • Go first yourself with a short, honest answer — it sets the length and tone.
  • Keep it optional. Let people pass with Skip person; a relaxed “pass” is better than a forced answer.
  • Match depth to trust. Light questions for new groups, Medium once people know each other, Deep only when the group has asked for it.
  • Time-box it. A 60-second answer timer keeps a ten-person round under fifteen minutes.
  • Use one question for everyone in big groups, or rotate questions in small ones.

Topics or questions?

A question asks people for a direct answer, usually in a sentence or two — perfect for going round a room. If you need a subject someone can speak or write about for a few minutes, use the random topic generator instead. For a full quiz with points, build one with the quiz board maker — its Random trivia tab also serves questions with answers. For an active warm-up, try the charades generator or quick rounds with the random word generator.

FAQ

What are good icebreaker questions for work?

Good work icebreakers are easy to answer in a sentence, positive, and don't put anyone on the spot: "What was the highlight of your week so far?" or "What is your favorite tool or shortcut at work?" Choose Icebreakers and Work & teams with Light depth — the default — and you'll get questions like these.

Can the generator pick who answers?

Yes. Open Who answers and type the names, one per line. Each question then shows who answers, taken from a shuffled order so everyone answers once before anyone answers again — and nobody goes twice in a row. Skip person moves to the next name if someone isn't ready.

Are the questions safe for work?

With Work-safe only on, which is the default, you only get questions that avoid health, religion, politics, money and dating. A few personal questions — first dates or regrets, for example — appear only when you switch it off, for groups of friends. Deep questions are reflective but never intimate.

Can I add my own questions?

Yes. Open My questions and type one per line, up to 300. Mix with built-in adds them to the shuffle; Use only mine asks only your questions — handy for an onboarding session or a team's own retro format. They're saved on this device and included when you share a link.

How many questions are there?

420 original questions in 10 categories, 42 in each: Icebreakers, Work & teams, Would you rather, This or that, Hypothetical, Funny, Deep & reflective, Retrospective, Remote warm-ups and Get to know you. 227 are light, 151 medium and 42 deep. The counter shows how many you haven't seen yet.

Can I show the questions in a video call?

Yes. Share your screen and press Present (or F): the question fills the window in large, high-contrast text that stays readable in a shrunken video tile. Press Space for the next question without leaving full screen. The answer timer, if you use one, stays visible too.

What is a good random question?

A good random question is open, easy to answer in a sentence or two, has no right answer and asks for nothing private. "What small thing made you smile today?" and "What is the best place you have visited in your own city?" work with any group. Avoid anything that ranks people or touches money, health or dating.

Is there a question of the day?

Yes. The Question of the day box above the card shows one light, work-safe question that is the same for everyone on the same date, so a team can share it in its chat. Click the box to copy it. The date picks the question, not a random draw, and the list starts again after 157 days.
