About this list

311 items · updated November 7, 2026

Dishes from 25 cuisines, from breakfast to dessert, each with a one-line description in our own words.

Vegetarian means no meat, poultry or seafood, and vegan means no animal products at all (the definitions below). Tags follow the standard recipe. When common versions differ — stock, fish sauce, ghee or gelatin — the dish is left untagged, so check ingredients yourself if you have dietary needs. The list makes no health or allergy claims.

Quick means about 30 minutes or less; a weekend project takes longer or needs planning ahead.

How to use the random food generator

  1. Press Generate or the Space bar. You get a dish with its cuisine, the meals it suits, how much effort it takes, and one line describing it.
  2. Narrow it down under Filters: Meal, Cuisine, Vegetarian only, Vegan only and Effort. The counter shows how many dishes are left.
  3. Get a few ideas at once with How many — three to choose from tonight, or seven for the week ahead.
  4. Leave Don’t repeat on so the same dish doesn’t keep coming back. Once you’ve seen every match, the page tells you and starts over.
  5. Act on it. Copy the names for a shopping list, Download list for a CSV of every matching dish, Share your filters with whoever you’re eating with, or Open in wheel to spin for it.

Ideas for a random dish

  • Dinner tonight. Choose Dinner and Quick (30 min or less), press Generate a few times, and cook the first dish you have most of the ingredients for.
  • A week of varied dinners. Set How many to 7 and you have a meal plan in one tap — no more pasta four nights in a row.
  • Office lunch vote. Filter by Lunch and Takeout or bakery, generate five options, send them to the wheel and spin it on the team call.
  • Cook-off themes. Give each team a random dish, or a random cuisine, and an hour to make its best version.
  • Date night. Pick Weekend project and a cuisine neither of you has cooked before, then shop and cook together.
  • Getting out of a rut. Choose a cuisine you rarely eat and generate until something sounds good.

Filters explained

  • Meal — Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snack and Dessert. Many dishes suit more than one meal, and press several chips to combine meals.
  • Cuisine — 25 cuisines: American, Mexican, Italian, French, Spanish, Greek, Middle Eastern, Turkish, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Filipino, Caribbean, West African, Ethiopian, Moroccan, British, German & Austrian, Nordic, Brazilian and Peruvian.
  • Vegetarian only and Vegan only — keep only dishes that are vegetarian, or vegan, in their standard recipe.
  • Effort — No cooking (assemble and eat), Quick (30 min or less), Weekend project (longer, or needs planning ahead) and Takeout or bakery (dishes most people buy rather than make).

Each filter you add narrows the list further: Dinner keeps 129 of the 311 dishes, Quick 64 of those, Vegetarian only 24 and Vegan only 5.

Filters narrow 311 dishes: Dinner 129, plus Quick 64, plus Vegetarian only 24, plus Vegan only 5.All dishes: 311Dinner: 129+ Quick: 64+ Vegetarian only: 24+ Vegan only: 5

If your filters leave nothing, the page says so; Reset filters brings all 311 dishes back.

Shortlist and spin

Sometimes the hard part isn’t finding ideas but choosing between them. Narrow the filters until the counter shows a handful of dishes — Vegetarian only plus Indian and Quick, for example, leaves six — and press Open in wheel (or W). The wheel spinner opens with those dishes as segments, titled What to Eat, so everyone at the table can watch the spin. Down to two and still undecided? Let the yes or no wheel settle it.

How the generator picks

Every dish that matches your filters has the same chance. With Dinner and Quick chosen, 64 dishes match, so each has a 1 in 64 chance (about 1.6%) on a single pick. Your browser’s secure random number generator makes the choice, in a way that doesn’t favor any position in the list. There’s no sorting by popularity and no paid placement, and nothing you choose is uploaded. With Don’t repeat on, dishes you’ve seen wait until every match has had its turn.

About the food list

The list holds 311 dishes from 25 cuisines — from pancakes and pho to pad thai, pork dumplings and pumpkin pie — each with a one-line description written in our own words. American dishes are the largest group, with 59; every other cuisine has between 4 and 25. 173 dishes are tagged vegetarian and 45 vegan.

Diet tags are deliberately cautious. Vegetarian means no meat, poultry or seafood; vegan means no animal products at all. A dish is tagged only if its standard recipe qualifies; when common versions differ — stock, fish sauce, ghee, gelatin — it stays untagged. The list doesn’t make health, nutrition or allergy claims, so if you have dietary needs, check the ingredients of the recipe or the menu you actually use. About this list under the tool repeats these rules, links the definitions and shows when the list was last updated.

FAQ

How does the random food generator pick a dish?

It takes every dish that matches your filters and picks one with your browser's secure random number generator, so each match has exactly the same chance. Nothing is weighted by popularity or paid placement. With Don't repeat on, dishes you've already seen sit out until every match has come up.

Can I get only vegetarian or vegan dishes?

Yes. Switch on Vegetarian only (173 dishes) or Vegan only (45 dishes) under Filters. The tags follow the standard recipe; where common versions differ — because of stock, fish sauce, ghee or gelatin, say — the dish is left untagged. Always check the ingredients of the version you cook or order.

Can I choose a cuisine?

Yes. Press one or more of the 25 Cuisine chips, from American, Mexican and Italian to Ethiopian, Filipino and Peruvian. The counter shows how many dishes match. Combine a cuisine with a meal or an effort level — Japanese plus Quick, for example — for a short, practical list.

Can I plan a week of dinners with it?

Yes. Choose Dinner, set How many to 7 and press Generate to get seven different dishes. If you don't like the mix, press Generate again for a new seven. Copy the list into your notes or shopping app, and with Don't repeat on, next week's dinners won't repeat this week's.

Does it include breakfast and desserts?

Yes. Under Meal, choose Breakfast (47 dishes) or Dessert (52), as well as Lunch, Dinner or Snack. Many dishes suit more than one meal — shakshuka counts as both breakfast and lunch — so the meal counts add up to more than the 311 dishes on the list.

Can I put my own favorites on a wheel?

Yes. Open the wheel spinner, type or paste your favorite dishes or places to eat, one per line, and spin. You can also start from this list: filter it down, press Open in wheel, then delete what you don't fancy and add your own. The wheel keeps your list on this device for next time.

What counts as a random food here?

A dish: something you would cook, order or buy ready to eat, such as pho, shakshuka or a cheeseburger. Single ingredients, drinks, brands and restaurants aren't on the list, so every result is a meal or a snack you can actually plan around.
